How Housing Progression Works

WoW's player housing system has its own dedicated progression track separate from your character level. Your Housing Level determines everything — the size of house you can own, how many items you can place, which rooms you can unlock, and what cosmetic rewards you earn along the way.

Your Housing Level starts at 1 when you complete the introductory questline and caps out at Level 20 (as of Patch 1.1). Levels 1 through 16 unlock meaningful gameplay features, while levels 17-20 provide cosmetic prestige rewards.

If you're brand new to WoW housing, start with our beginner's guide to get your first plot set up, then use this guide to plan your progression path.

    Understanding the Decor Budget

The decor budget is one of the most important numbers in housing. It determines the maximum number of items you can place across your entire plot — indoors and outdoors combined.

    Budget Allocation Tips

Not all items cost the same. While most standard furniture costs 1 budget point, certain complex items cost 2 or even 3:

    - Simple items (books, candles, small decor): 1 point

  • Standard furniture (chairs, tables, beds): 1 point
  • Complex items (animated objects, particle effects): 2 points
  • Large animated items (fountains, mechanical devices): 3 points

Invisible and hidden items still count. If you use hidden platforms or clipped items for structural purposes (common in Advanced Mode builds), they consume budget like any visible item. Audit your builds regularly.

Budget is per-character, not account-wide. Each character's housing plot has its own independent budget based on that character's Housing Level. However, items in your collection are account-wide.

    Maximizing Your Budget

    - Use scaling to make fewer items feel like more — one scaled-up rug covers more floor than three small ones

  • Prioritize high-impact items that fill visual space (large paintings, curtains, rugs)
  • Remove duplicate or overlapping items that don't contribute visually
  • Use wall and floor customization (wallpaper, tiles) instead of item-based wall and floor coverage when possible

XP Sources: How to Level Up

Housing experience comes from a variety of activities. Here's every source and its approximate XP value:

    Decorating (Primary Source)

    | Activity | XP | Cooldown |

|----------|-----|----------| | Placing an item for the first time | 15 XP | None | | Placing any item | 5 XP | None | | Completing a room (fill all suggested slots) | 100 XP | Per room | | First time using Advanced Mode | 50 XP | Once | | Saving a layout | 25 XP | Once per layout |

Social Activities

| Activity | XP | Cooldown | |----------|-----|----------| | Visiting another player's plot | 20 XP | 5 per day | | Receiving a visitor | 10 XP | 10 per day | | Getting a "Like" on your plot | 15 XP | No cap | | Liking another player's plot | 5 XP | 10 per day |

Weekly and One-Time Sources

| Activity | XP | Frequency | |----------|-----|-----------| | Weekly housing quest | 200 XP | Weekly | | Housing World Quest (when available) | 150 XP | Varies | | Crafting a housing item for the first time | 30 XP | Per recipe | | Unlocking a new decor item | 10 XP | Per item | | Seasonal housing event participation | 300 XP | Per event | | Achievement-linked housing milestones | 100-500 XP | One-time |

Collection Milestones

Collecting decor items also awards XP at thresholds:

- 50 unique items: 100 XP

  • 100 unique items: 200 XP
  • 250 unique items: 400 XP
  • 500 unique items: 750 XP
  • 1,000 unique items: 1,500 XP
  • 2,000 unique items: 3,000 XP

    Efficient Leveling Tips

    Levels 1-5: Speed Run

The early levels are fast. Focus on:

    1. Place every starter item you receive from the intro questline — each first-time placement gives 15 XP

2. Buy cheap vendor items and place them. Even if you remove them later, you get the XP 3. Visit 5 players' plots per day — this is free XP with zero item cost 4. Complete the weekly housing quest every week without exception 5. Craft housing items if you have any crafting professions — first-time crafts give 30 XP each (see our crafting guide for what each profession makes)

Levels 6-10: Steady Climb

The mid-levels require more intentional effort:

1. Upgrade to a medium house immediately at Level 6 — the new rooms give fresh first-time placement XP 2. Fill suggested room slots for the 100 XP completion bonus per room 3. Engage with the social system — like plots, invite visitors, participate in neighborhood events 4. Chase collection milestones — buy items from different vendors across Azeroth, even cheap ones count 5. Don't skip seasonal events — they're massive XP injections

Levels 11-15: The Long Haul

Progression slows noticeably here. Plan accordingly:

1. Upgrade to a large house at Level 11 — same strategy, new rooms mean new completion bonuses 2. Export and share layouts — each saved layout gives XP, and shared layouts can earn likes from other players (XP per like) 3. Diversify crafting — if you haven't yet, level alt professions specifically for housing recipes 4. Stack social XP daily — this becomes a significant portion of your total XP at higher levels 5. Complete every housing achievement — check the housing achievement tab for any you've missed

Levels 16-20: Prestige Grind

These levels take the longest. The most efficient players:

1. Max out daily and weekly XP sources without fail 2. Participate in every seasonal event — the 300 XP chunks matter 3. Build and share on WoWPlots — community engagement often leads to more visitors and likes 4. Focus on collection completion — those milestone XP rewards add up

House Size Comparison

| Feature | Small | Medium | Large | |---------|-------|--------|-------| | Indoor rooms (max) | 4 | 10 | 18 | | Floors | 1 | 2 | 3 + cellar | | Outdoor area | Small yard | Garden + yard | Expansive grounds | | Budget at tier unlock | 100 | 275 | 550 | | Required Housing Level | 1 | 6 | 11 | | Upgrade cost (gold) | Free | 5,000g | 25,000g |

Choosing the Right Biome for Your Progression

Your house's biome is purely cosmetic but affects the feel of your outdoor space significantly. As you progress and unlock yard expansions and terrain editing, the biome becomes more impactful.

We've written a detailed comparison of all available biomes — check our biomes guide to pick the one that matches your planned build style.

What's Next After Max Level?

At Level 20, progression becomes about refinement and creativity rather than unlocks. The endgame for housing enthusiasts is:

- Perfecting builds and sharing them with the community

  • Collecting rare decor items from difficult content
  • Seasonal event exclusives that rotate each year
  • Community recognition through galleries like WoWPlots

Blizzard has hinted at future housing expansions including guild housing, expanded plot sizes, and new biomes in upcoming patches. Reaching max level now ensures you're ready for whatever comes next.
