WoW Housing Crafting Guide: Which Professions Craft What
A complete guide to WoW housing crafting. Learn what each profession makes for player housing, top recipes to prioritize, and how to build a crafting plan for your dream home.
Why Crafting Matters for Housing
You can furnish a decent house entirely from vendor-purchased items. But if you want a house that stands out — with unique textures, animated elements, and high-quality pieces — you need crafted decor items.
Every major crafting profession in WoW contributes housing items, and many of the most visually impressive pieces in the game are craft-only. Some can be bought on the auction house, but prices for popular pieces run steep. Crafting them yourself (or through a friend's profession) is the most efficient path to a well-decorated home.
This guide covers what every profession makes, which recipes to prioritize, and how to plan your crafting strategy. If you're looking for a broader overview of all decor sources, start with our complete decor items guide.
Tailoring: Fabrics, Curtains, and Soft Furnishings
Tailoring is arguably the most valuable housing profession. Fabric-based items fill roles that no other profession or vendor source can match.
What Tailoring Crafts
- Curtains and drapes: Window curtains in multiple lengths, colors, and fabrics (silk, linen, velvet). Curtains are the single most requested housing item, and Tailoring is the only source.
- Tablecloths and runners: Dress up tables with cloth coverings — embroidered, plain, faction-colored
- Cushions and pillows: Decorative throw pillows, floor cushions, bolster pillows in various fabrics
- Bed canopies and drapery: Fabric overhangs for four-poster beds and alcoves
- Tapestries: Large woven wall hangings with intricate designs — these are some of the highest-detail wall items in the game
- Cloth banners: Custom-dyed banners in color combinations not available from vendors
- Upholstery covers: Apply to certain furniture items to change their fabric appearance
Priority Recipes
1. Mooncloth Curtain Set — the most versatile curtain set, works with every build style
Materials
Most Tailoring housing recipes use Midnight-era cloth (Duskweave, Lunarthread) plus dyes purchased from housing vendors. Higher-tier recipes may require rare cloth drops from dungeon or raid content.
Engineering: Gadgets, Lights, and Animated Decor
Engineering items bring movement and interactivity to housing. If your build needs something mechanical, animated, or quirky, Engineering is the profession.
What Engineering Crafts
- Automated lights: Lights that cycle through colors, pulse, or respond to player proximity
- Mechanical displays: Spinning gears, rotating globes, oscillating pendulums
- Gadget furniture: A desk with moving parts, a chair that reclines, a table with a built-in display
- Sound devices: Music boxes, ambient sound generators, doorbell mechanisms
- Themed items: Gnomish and Goblin variants of many items — Gnomish items are sleek and precise, Goblin items are volatile and oversized
- Animated toys: Small animated pets and mechanical creatures for display (non-combat)
- Firework launchers: Programmable outdoor firework displays for special occasions
Priority Recipes
1. Chromatic Light Array — a ceiling-mounted light that smoothly cycles through colors, perfect as a room centerpiece
Materials
Engineering recipes typically require ores, gems, and mechanical parts. The mechanical parts are crafted intermediate items — plan your material chain accordingly. Some recipes also require Arcane Capacitors, a new Midnight reagent.
Blacksmithing: Metal Furnishings and Displays
Blacksmithing produces the sturdiest, most imposing furniture in the game. Metal items add weight and permanence to any room.
What Blacksmithing Crafts
- Iron and steel chandeliers: Heavy, dramatic ceiling lights — some of the best lighting items in the game
- Metal furniture: Wrought iron beds, steel tables, metal shelving units
- Weapon and armor displays: Wall-mounted weapon racks, armor mannequins, shield displays — specifically designed for transmog showcasing
- Decorative metalwork: Iron scrollwork, metal wall panels, decorative gates
- Outdoor structures: Metal fences, iron garden arches, lamp posts
- Fireplace accessories: Andirons, fire screens, poker sets, grates
- Kitchen metalware: Pot racks, utensil hooks, serving trays
Priority Recipes
1. Wrought Iron Chandelier (Grand) — a massive 12-candle chandelier suitable for great halls
Materials
Standard ores and bars from Midnight zones. Higher-tier recipes require Tempered Midnight Steel, which itself requires a multi-step smelting process.
Leatherworking: Seating, Rugs, and Hides
Leatherworking fills a unique niche — organic, warm textures that pair well with rustic, nature, and tribal build styles.
What Leatherworking Crafts
- Leather seating: Leather armchairs, ottomans, bar stools with leather seats, leather-wrapped benches
- Fur and hide rugs: Bear rugs, wolf pelts, exotic hide floor coverings — far more variety than vendor rugs
- Mounted hides: Wall-mounted hide displays, leather wall panels
- Leather storage: Leather-bound chests, saddlebag-style storage, travel trunk items
- Drum and instrument items: Decorative drums, hide-covered musical instruments
- Outdoor items: Leather tent sections, hide-draped canopies, leather wind chimes
Priority Recipes
1. Thick Bear Fur Rug — a large, warm rug that anchors any rustic room
Materials
Leatherworking uses hides and leather from Midnight-zone creatures. Some recipes require specific creature drops (e.g., Thunderhide for the highest-tier rug).
Alchemy: Potions, Apparatus, and Magical Decor
Alchemy items bring a magical, scholarly atmosphere to housing. They're perfect for wizard towers, apothecary shops, and mystical builds.
What Alchemy Crafts
- Potion shelf displays: Pre-arranged shelves of colorful potions — various sizes and color schemes
- Bubbling cauldrons: Animated cauldrons with colored steam effects (green, purple, blue)
- Alchemical apparatus: Distillation sets, beakers and flasks on stands, ingredient grinders
- Glowing vials: Individual oversized vials with luminous liquid — function as unique light sources
- Herb drying racks: Wall-mounted herb displays, hanging herb bundles
- Transmutation circles: Floor-placed magical circles with subtle animated effects
- Ingredient displays: Organized shelves of alchemical ingredients
Priority Recipes
1. Grand Alchemist's Workstation — a complete alchemy table with animated bubbling effects, the centerpiece of any lab build
Materials
Alchemy recipes use a mix of herbs, reagents, and vials. The animated items typically require Midnight Essence, a reagent refined from multiple herb types.
Enchanting: Magical Lights and Floating Decor
Enchanting produces some of the most visually striking items in the housing system. Magical effects, floating objects, and runic decorations are Enchanting's domain.
What Enchanting Crafts
- Floating objects: Books, crystals, orbs, and candles that hover in place with magical particle trails
- Magical light sources: Arcane-infused lights in various colors — brighter and more colorful than standard lights
- Runic decorations: Wall-mounted and floor-placed runes that glow and pulse
- Enchanted mirrors: Mirrors with subtle magical effects (rippling surface, faint glow)
- Animated books: Tomes that float open with turning pages
- Magical barriers: Translucent force-field decorations for doorways or windows
- Disenchanting displays: Animated displays of swirling magical dust
Priority Recipes
1. Floating Arcane Tome — an open book hovering in mid-air with slowly turning pages, one of the most impressive animated items in the game
Materials
Enchanting recipes require enchanting dust, essences, and crystals from disenchanting gear. Higher-tier items need Midnight Shards, obtained by disenchanting epic-quality Midnight gear.
Inscription: Books, Scrolls, and Written Decor
Inscription fills a specific niche — written and paper-based items that add scholarly detail and lore flavor to builds.
What Inscription Crafts
- Readable books: Place-able books with actual text content — lore excerpts, poetry, blank journals
- Scroll displays: Rolled and unrolled scrolls on tables or mounted on walls
- Map displays: Framed maps of Azeroth zones, dungeons, and cities
- Written letters: Folded letters and sealed envelopes as table decorations
- Blueprints and schematics: Technical drawings suitable for workshop builds
- Bookshelf fillers: Stacks of books, organized book rows, and scattered book piles specifically designed to fill shelves naturally
- Calligraphy displays: Framed written works and illuminated manuscripts
Priority Recipes
1. Cartographer's Map of Azeroth — a large, detailed wall-mounted map suitable as a centerpiece
Materials
Inscription uses inks and parchment. Most inks are milled from herbs. Rare recipes may require Astral Ink, crafted from Midnight-tier herbs.
Jewelcrafting: Gems, Crystals, and Displays
Jewelcrafting brings sparkle and luxury to housing. Crystal formations, gem displays, and luminous stone items add elegance to any build.
What Jewelcrafting Crafts
- Gem display cases: Show off cut gems in custom arrangements
- Crystal formations: Standing crystal clusters in various gemstone colors (ruby, sapphire, emerald, amethyst, diamond)
- Luminous stone items: Polished gems that function as subtle, warm light sources
- Jewelry stands: Display stands for necklaces, rings, and accessories
- Decorative gem mosaics: Wall-mounted mosaic panels made from gem fragments
- Crystal chandeliers: Light fixtures made from cut crystals — premium look
- Geode displays: Split geodes showing crystal interiors
Priority Recipes
1. Prismatic Crystal Chandelier — a chandelier made of multi-colored gems that casts rainbow light
Materials
Jewelcrafting uses uncut gems and settings from Midnight-zone mining. Rare recipes require Flawless Midnight Gems, which have a low drop rate from gem nodes.
Planning Your Crafting Strategy
If You Have One Profession
Prioritize based on your build style:
- Rustic/tavern builds: Leatherworking or Tailoring
- Elegant/luxury builds: Jewelcrafting or Enchanting
- Gothic/dark builds: Alchemy or Enchanting
- Mechanical/quirky builds: Engineering
- Library/scholarly builds: Inscription or Enchanting
- General versatility: Tailoring (widest range of universally useful items)
If You Have Alts with Professions
Spread professions across alts to cover more categories. Crafted items are account-wide once learned — craft on any character, use on any character's plot.
A strong two-profession combination:
- Tailoring + Enchanting: Covers soft furnishings and magical effects
- Blacksmithing + Leatherworking: Covers metal and organic furnishings
- Engineering + Alchemy: Covers animated and atmospheric items
- Jewelcrafting + Inscription: Covers luxury display and scholarly items
Auction House Strategy
Check auction house prices before crafting. Some items are cheap to buy because many players craft them (basic Tailoring curtains), while others hold value because their materials are rare (Enchanting floating items, Engineering gadgets).
Sell what's expensive, buy what's cheap, craft what's in between.
Crafting for the Community
If you've maxed out a profession's housing recipes, consider crafting items to sell or gift to other housing enthusiasts. The WoW housing community is generous — many builders help each other fill gaps in their collections.
